Akira Ransomware Decryptor Uses Nvidia GPUs to Rescue Files
Innovative Breakthrough With Akira Ransomware
On December 25, 2025, Yohanes Nugroho, an adept Indonesian software developer, made headlines addressing the notorious Akira ransomware. Known for his informative Tinyhack blog, Nugroho introduced a novel decryptor leveraging Nvidia GPU technology to rescue victims, presenting a cost-effective alternative to paying hefty ransoms.
His journey into this frontier began with the assumption that brute-forcing encryption via file timestamps would be a straightforward task. However, he quickly realized the complexity of the challenge. The launch of his effective tool brought relief to at least one victim, underscoring the decryptor’s potential in fighting this global menace.
Decryptor’s Powerful Usage of Nvidia GPUs
Since its launch in early 2023, Akira ransomware has amassed over 250 victims, collecting upwards of $42 million in ransoms. Initially striking Windows systems, it later evolved to threaten Linux, particularly in VMware ESXi environments. Although Avast made strides with a previous decryptor for Windows, its efficacy waned as attackers updated their methods.
Nugroho’s brute-force strategy exploits Akira’s reliance on current nanosecond-based encryption. This method faced hurdles, notably the limited file modification time logging by VMware, resolved by the accessible C++ coded ransomware. By translating this work onto Nvidia’s CUDA platform, Nugroho exponentially increased processing speed. Upgrading to the RTX 4090 proved pivotal, as it dramatically enhanced testing capabilities, sifting through millions of potential offsets swiftly.
Though confronting the attackers’ adaptable nature, Nugroho’s decryptor, costing around $1,200, offers a community-driven solution to a persistent cyber threat, readily accessible on GitHub.
