INTERPOL’s Massive African Cybercrime Bust Recovers $3 Million
A Coordinated Blow Against Cybercrime in Africa
Recently, a major cybercrime crackdown, known as Operation Sentinel, wrapped up with some impressive figures—574 arrests and about $3 million recovered. Spanning October to November, this initiative was a multi-national effort by 19 countries in Africa, aiming squarely at three critical cyber threats: business email compromise (BEC), digital extortion, and ransomware. These activities had been flagged as primary challenges in INTERPOL’s 2025 Africa Cyber Threat Assessment Report, and the results are nothing short of remarkable.
During this sweep, more than 6,000 harmful online links were taken down. Six distinct ransomware varieties were also cracked open, offering hope amid sobering losses that topped $21 million. Such achievements highlight the laser-like focus and resourcefulness of Africa’s law enforcement in tackling these sophisticated cyber threats.
Successful Tactics and Teamwork in the Face of Cybercrime
Senegal saw a dramatic save when vigilant teams thwarted a $7.9 million heist via BEC, freezing the accounts just in time. Ghana also turned the tide by decoding ransomware to recover 30 terabytes of encrypted data, averting a $120,000 payout. Moreover, an enterprising scam posing as fast-food chains was dismantled in Ghana, marking ten arrests and the seizure of numerous digital devices.
In Benin and Cameroon, the offensive continued with law enforcement pulling 43 malicious domains and calling time on over 4,000 fraudulent social media accounts. In Cameroon, police nipped a scam in the bud, freezing bank accounts tied to compromised servers swiftly.
INTERPOL’s Cybercrime Director Neal Jetton underscores the pressing need to combat rising cyber threats, praising the collaboration that made Operation Sentinel a protective shield for finances and infrastructure. This project relied on partnerships with key players like Team Cymru and Trend Micro, sketching out a new map for cyber defense.
Jointly funded by the UK’s Foreign Office and internationally backed by European initiatives, this operation marked a leap forward, involving nations such as Nigeria, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. All echoed the importance of working closely across borders to tackle the growing cyber menace.
