Manufacturing Sector Faces Surge in Ransomware Attacks in 2024

Ransomware Surge in Industrial Sectors

Dragos, a leading cybersecurity firm, recently reported a troubling increase in ransomware attacks across industrial sectors, with manufacturing bearing the brunt—accounting for 72% of incidents in the third quarter. From July to September, industrial organizations faced 742 ransomware events, a rise compared to the first half of the year. North America remained the primary target, whereas Europe saw a slight decline. Conversely, Asia, notably Thailand, experienced a growth in incidents.

Manufacturing faced significant threats, particularly in construction, which encountered 142 of the 532 reported manufacturing-related incidents. Other affected areas included equipment manufacturing, the food and beverage sector, and electronics, highlighting the widespread vulnerability.

Ransomware Tactics Evolving

Dragos executives Abdulrahman H. Alamri and Lexie Mooney pointed out three factors shaping this quarter’s ransomware landscape. Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) operations continued to loom large. However, a notable increase in fragmented operators and identity-based extortion groups added complexity, expanding into enterprise spaces like manufacturing and logistics. Smaller, less organized groups have shown they can still exert pressure by targeting critical business systems.

One standout group, Qilin, was involved in 138 incidents, mainly through a strong affiliate network, while Akira exploited SonicWall VPN vulnerabilities. These and other emerging groups pose ongoing threats, although they haven’t yet reached the advanced capabilities of affecting critical infrastructure systems.

The evolving ecosystem, bolstered by easier entry due to AI tools, indicates a probable rise in both the frequency and sophistication of ransomware attacks. Dragos anticipates these trends will continue through 2025, urging robust cybersecurity measures to tackle this persistent threat.
