Proton Sheets: Reinventing Privacy in Spreadsheets

In early December 2025, Proton, a Swiss tech company known for its privacy-first approach, launched Proton Sheets. This tool is the latest in its suite of productivity apps and provides an end-to-end encrypted alternative to mainstays like Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. What’s the big deal about Proton Sheets? It’s all about user privacy.

Every document you create in Proton Sheets is shrouded in encryption, meaning no external party—not even Proton—can peek at your data. It’s only accessible to you, the user. With the rise of AI and increasing concerns over how personal data is used, tools like Proton Sheets are becoming essential. While AI tools are fantastic, they often need a lot of data to function, and that data can sometimes come from the productivity apps you use daily. Proton Sheets offers peace of mind against these background data grabs.

The Power and Simplicity of Proton Sheets

Anant Vijay Singh, Head of Product at Proton Drive, likes to say that Proton Sheets not only fills the productivity gap but also keeps your data yours. Imagine typical spreadsheet apps where your every click might serve big tech’s data agendas. Proton Sheets lets you bypass such concerns with its privacy-centric design.

Besides strong security, the interface of Proton Sheets feels quite familiar, making transitions smooth for newcomers. It allows collaborative editing and controls over who sees or edits documents. You can import existing spreadsheets, enhancing its appeal. Included within the Proton Drive ecosystem, Proton Sheets comes with a secure word processor known as Proton Docs. A basic account is free, with a premium version starting at $3.99 per month for added benefits.

In the tug-of-war between productivity and privacy, Proton Sheets stands out as an innovator, prioritizing your data’s confidentiality while enhancing your work efficiency.
