Marquis Ransomware Attack: Credit Unions Face Widespread Data Breach

Continuing Impact of Marquis Ransomware Attack on Credit Unions

In recent developments, a growing number of credit unions across the US are gearing up to disclose significant data breaches. This wave of revelations stems from a ransomware attack on Marquis Software Solutions, a key vendor in marketing and data management for financial institutions, as reported by TechCrunch.

Marquis has started notifying numerous banks and credit unions about customer data compromised during the August 14 cyberattack, now classified as a ransomware incident. State documents reviewed indicate that at least 400,000 individuals in states like Iowa, Maine, Texas, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire have been affected, with numbers anticipated to rise. The breach occurred due to a zero-day vulnerability in Marquis’ SonicWall firewall, granting unauthorized access to sensitive information such as names, birthdates, addresses, account numbers, card details, and Social Security numbers.

Data Breaches Emerge

The fallout has begun to manifest, with CoVantage Credit Union acknowledging that data for around 160,000 members could have been accessed. The breach, confirmed to be isolated within Marquis’ systems, did not extend to CoVantage’s own infrastructure.

Similarly, Maine State Credit Union disclosed that 38,334 of its members were impacted. The attack exploited the SonicWall vulnerability to potentially capture detailed personal and financial information. Marquis has taken steps to involve cybersecurity experts, notify federal authorities, and inform affected clients. As more state filings become transparent, the scale of the affected individuals and institutions is likely to grow, underscoring the importance of robust cybersecurity measures.
