Nigeria Leads Africa’s Digital Evolution

Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), under the leadership of Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, is championing Africa’s digital future. Speaking at the International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance (ICEGOV 2025) in Abuja, Inuwa highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to regional digital sovereignty and collaboration.

ICEGOV 2025, a first for West Africa, brought together digital thinkers from over 50 nations. Discussions revolved around key themes: “Shaping the Future of Digital Governance through Cooperation, Innovation, and Inclusion.” Inuwa emphasized digital governance as a “social contract,” pivotal to Africa’s growth and international competitiveness. However, the continent faces challenges, holding less than 1% of global data center capacity despite having nearly 18% of the world’s population.

Fostering Collaboration and Building Infrastructure

Inuwa stressed that building local infrastructure is essential for true digital sovereignty. He advocated for the creation of robust domestic cloud services and data storage facilities, and for enhancing regional connectivity. His message was clear: Africa should not rely on external entities to manage its digital future.

He urged nations at the West African Digital Governance Forum to align with the African Union’s Digital Transformation Strategy and develop interoperable systems. In Inuwa’s words, “When our services interact seamlessly, our nations advance collectively.”

Highlighting Nigeria’s efforts, he pointed to the Data Protection Act 2023 and the country’s digital public infrastructure milestones. As Nigeria continues to push forward with initiatives like the 3 Million Technical Talent program, Inuwa’s message is clear—collaboration and innovation are the cornerstones of Africa’s digital ascent.
