Ex-Ransomware Negotiators Charged in Major ALPHV/BlackCat US Attacks

A Legal Battle Unfolds

In an intriguing twist, news has emerged of a former ransomware negotiator and an incident response manager facing charges in Florida. The allegations, involving exploits of the notorious ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware, have brought a spotlight on cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the United States. These attacks allegedly led to extortions totaling $1.3 million from a single company.

Indicted by a federal grand jury in the Southern District of Florida are Ryan Clifford Goldberg of Watkinsville, Georgia, and Kevin Tyler Martin of Roanoke, Texas. They’re charged with a variety of offenses including conspiracy to disrupt interstate commerce through extortion, causing intentional damage to a secured computer system, and other related felonies.

The Criminal Network

Reports like that from the Chicago Sun-Times suggest that during the alleged streak of crimes, Goldberg was involved as an incident response manager at Sygnia Cybersecurity Services, while Martin was a ransomware negotiator for DigitalMint. This company specializes in helping clients cope with ransomware demands and managing cryptocurrency payments.

A third individual from Land O’Lakes, Florida, also suspected as a part of this scheme, remains unnamed. Prosecutors have linked this trio to at least five victim organizations through their activities from May 2023 to April 2025, demanding multimillion-dollar ransoms. Among their notable targets was a Tampa-based medical device manufacturer, allegedly coerced into paying approximately $1.27 million to unlock their encrypted data.

This case underscores the persistent perils posed by digital crime syndicates and the sophisticated methods they employ to exploit the virtual ecosystem.
