DigitalMint and Sygnia Employees Charged in $1.2M Ransomware Scandal
Indictments in a Ransomware Operation
In a significant shake-up, the U.S. Department of Justice has charged individuals linked with DigitalMint and Sygnia over a ransomware conspiracy. Kevin Tyler Martin, a former employee, and Ryan Clifford Goldberg, an ex-incident response manager at Sygnia, allegedly extorted $1.2 million from a Florida medical device company. The case revolves around accusations of computer hacking and extortion.
These individuals, according to prosecutors, misused their positions to infiltrate business networks, steal sensitive information, and deploy ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware. This dangerous group specializes in ransomware-as-a-service, creating malware to encrypt files and demanding ransom for their release.
Martin, along with another implicated person, worked as a negotiator at DigitalMint, which typically assists ransomware victims. Goldberg’s role at Sygnia involved incident response, and it’s alleged they exploited this expertise to conduct their attacks.
Impact and Response
The FBI affidavit discloses that these cybercriminals extracted more than $1.2 million from their main target, a Florida-based medical device manufacturer. Their approach involved hijacking the company’s systems and blocking access until payment was made. The conspiracy also targeted businesses in Virginia and Maryland, affecting sectors from drone technology to pharmaceuticals.
The indictment report by the Chicago Sun-Times brought Sygnia and DigitalMint into the spotlight. Sygnia’s CEO confirmed Goldberg’s employment there before his activities emerged, leading to his dismissal. DigitalMint President, Marc Grens, insists Martin operated outside his job description and cooperates with federal inquiries.
