Why Canadian Data Sovereignty Matters in the Age of AI
Canada’s AI Sovereignty: A Vision from Bell’s CEO
Recently, Mirko Bibic, Bell’s CEO, made a compelling case for Canada to step up its game in artificial intelligence (AI). He spoke passionately about why it’s crucial for Canadian companies and the government to invest in AI infrastructure at home. The goal is straightforward yet significant—maintain independence and control over the country’s tech resources.
According to Bibic, building our data centers and networks is key to reducing reliance on foreign entities. By doing so, Canada can better manage its data and strengthen its economic position. Alongside improvements in fiber optics and software, the development of home-based AI models is a priority.
Building a Homegrown AI Ecosystem
Bell, aiming to be at the forefront of this initiative, plans to boost its AI revenue substantially. By 2028, the company targets reaching $1.5 billion in AI revenue. To support this, Bell is setting up six new data centers in British Columbia, with a power capacity of 500 megawatts, and partnering with Cohere to deploy advanced AI models locally. This infrastructure is intended to serve both public and private needs in Canada, providing a local alternative to U.S.-based cloud offerings.
Bibic stressed the importance of keeping Canadian data on its soil to protect it from foreign regulations. A survey backed this up, showing that 88% of large companies prioritize data sovereignty, and 63% believe their data should stay in Canada.
A Collaborative Path Forward
Bell doesn’t plan to take this journey alone. Although independent of public funding, the telecom giant advocates for collaborative efforts among Canadian firms to create a robust tech network. This comprehensive approach not only supports national interests but also aligns with Ottawa’s $2 billion investment to bolster Canada’s computing prowess and AI sovereignty. As Bell expands its footprint, including ventures into U.S. markets like acquiring Ziply Fiber, it demonstrates a commitment to growing network capacities across North America, cementing Canada’s place in the burgeoning AI landscape.
