Muji Halts Online Sales After Askul Ransomware Attack Disrupts Logistics
Muji’s Online Sales Halted by Cyberattack on Logistics Partner
In a rather surprising turn of events, Japanese retailer Muji has had to pause its online sales. The reason? A cyberattack on its logistics partner, Askul. Late on Sunday, Muji shared that “logistics failures” had disrupted its e-commerce activities, though specifics on a timeline for resuming normal service weren’t provided. If you’re a fan of Muji’s signature minimalist style—whether it’s furniture, apparel, or chic stationery—you might have encountered some exasperating issues trying to shop online.
Askul, responsible for the delivery backbone of Muji’s online store, faced a severe setback. The cyber incident involved ransomware, taking down Askul’s entire order and shipment system as the breach’s full scope remains under review. Moreover, there’s been concern over potential leaks of personal data through this cyber breach.
Ransomware Disrupts Major Retail Functionality
Due to this disruption, Askul has had to suspend several key services, including new user accounts, product returns, and even its pharmaceutical deliveries. Customer service lines are down, leaving users in a lurch. Orders set for October 21 are being sequentially canceled, adding another layer of complication for both businesses and consumers that depend on Askul’s logistics.
The impact isn’t limited to Muji. Loft, another prominent Japanese home goods retailer, has acknowledged similar service disruptions. Sogo & Seibu department store chain also felt the shockwaves, having to halt some of their online sales. Sadly, this isn’t an isolated incident. Just recently, Asahi, the notable Japanese brewery, fell prey to a cyberattack from the Qilin group, affiliated with Russia.
Both Muji and Askul have apologized to customers, promising to fix the situation swiftly. Until solutions are found, fans will have to wait to soak in Japan’s unique minimalist charm via Muji’s website.
