Why India Must Lead: Data Sovereignty and Homegrown Tech Innovation
The Need for Local Tech Leaders in India
In a recent chat with the Economic Times, Sridhar Vembu, co-founder of Zoho Corporation, emphasized a crucial necessity: building India’s own tech giants to secure the nation’s data sovereignty. According to Vembu, depending too heavily on foreign technology poses a significant risk. It opens up vulnerabilities to geopolitical tensions and the misuse of sensitive data and software.
Vembu believes that India should take cues from China by fostering national champions in tech. Zoho, which is headquartered in Chennai, has garnered attention, not least because of endorsements from high-profile government figures. With support from leaders like Home Minister Amit Shah and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Zoho’s offerings, such as Zoho Mail and the messaging app Arattai, are gaining traction.
Building a Globally Competitive Tech Industry
As Arattai gears up for its official launch in November, complete with end-to-end encryption, Vembu underscores the importance of keeping control over technology infrastructure and data within India. “Technology can be weaponized against nations,” Vembu warns, advocating for Indian regulatory oversight.
He stresses that self-reliance should translate to global competitiveness. Vembu calls for discarding outdated international trade agreements, urging robust government support for domestic tech firms. Highlighting Zoho’s global footprint, he says, “Our goal is to ensure our products are not just ‘made in India,’ but stand as the best worldwide.”
The overarching message is clear: India must nurture its tech prowess to avoid dependence on foreign systems. Empowering local firms is essential to maintaining sovereignty while thriving in global trade.
