Ransomware Attacks Surge: BlackFog’s 2025 Q3 Cybersecurity Report
Ransomware Attacks Surge by 36% in Q3 2025, According to BlackFog Report
The latest data from BlackFog paints a daunting picture of the ransomware landscape for third quarter 2025. From July to September, ransomware attacks surged by a significant 36%, jumping to 270 incidents from 198 this time last year. The broader view is even more concerning: since Q3 2020, there’s been a 335% increase in such attacks, with 93 countries feeling the impact.
The monthly breakdown shows that July led with 96 attacks (a 50% hike), August had 92 attacks (up 37%), and September experienced 85 attacks (an increase of 27%). Notably, the Qilin group dominated with 20 attacks, although a large portion—nearly 40%—are still unattributed. Newcomers like DEVMAN have surfaced, with notable activities like a bold $91 million demand from China’s Shimao Group.
Impact on Industries
The ransomware wave hasn’t spared any sector, but manufacturing, construction, and services get hit hardest. The healthcare sector suffers most from disclosed attacks, with 86 incidents or 32% of publicly known cases. Alarmingly, 85% of all attacks aren’t reported, highlighting a 21% rise from last year, with Qilin leading these silent strikes. Data theft remains a favorite tactic, featuring in a record 96% of attacks.
BlackFog’s CEO, Dr. Darren Williams, stresses this threat’s magnitude, citing disruptions ranging from grounded flights to automotive production halts. He advocates for more robust cybersecurity defenses, encouraging constant vigilance and strategic data protection as critical responses.
