Why Slime Molds Can’t Mimic Quantum Computing Behavior

Slime Molds: A Miss in Quantum Mimicry

Slime molds, renowned for their problem-solving smarts, have hit a snag in quantum circles. Recent research has squashed the notion they might mirror quantum entanglement or work as biological memristors. Instead, these organisms act more like simple resistor-capacitor setups. In other words, slime molds aren’t ready to join the quantum computing big leagues just yet.

A study from institutions like Biofaction KG and the University of Plymouth put slime molds to the test. While past musings hinted at these little guys, specifically Physarum polycephalum, behaving like memristors, the reality begged to differ. Memristors are circuit stars, famed for remembering past electrical inputs and potentially mimicking quantum gates. Sadly, slime molds didn’t hit that mark.

Testing Realities vs. Expectations

The research involved a thorough dive, testing 38 slime mold cultures in over 290 experiments. When exposed to various electrical conditions, slime molds showed straightforward resistor-capacitor behavior—not the unique resistance memory of a true memristor. Researchers didn’t spot the elusive “pinched hysteresis loop,” a telltale memristor trait.

Through it all, the slime mold’s body, a mix of water and ions, acted like a basic capacitor. Sure, it could store charge, but it failed the dynamic resistance test. Though they can’t mimic memristive behavior, slime molds aren’t tech duds. The study hints at their potential in bio-electronic parts for things like analog circuit filters or energy-efficient computing.

The findings underscore the challenges of blending biology with quantum tech but offer a blueprint for future explorations into smart, eco-friendly electronics.
