Signal Boosts Post-Quantum Security With Triple Ratchet Protocol
Signal’s Leap into Post-Quantum Security
Signal is stepping up its security game by integrating a new layer of cryptographic protection aimed at guarding against future threats from quantum computing. This advancement, called the Triple Ratchet, introduces a Sparse Post-Quantum Ratchet (SPQR) to its renowned Signal Protocol. The goal is to maintain robust protection and forward secrecy even in a world where quantum decryption poses a real threat.
Developed with insights from experts at PQShield, NYU, and AIST, this initiative builds on Signal’s previous steps toward quantum resistance, which began with PQXDH in 2023. PQXDH efficiently tackled “harvest-now-decrypt-later” threats by securing how messages are initiated, while SPQR ensures this security throughout entire chat sessions.
Ensuring Security for Millions
The Signal Protocol, a staple in messaging encryption since 2013, supports billions of conversations worldwide through apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Traditionally reliant on Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH), a method potentially vulnerable to advanced quantum tech, this upgrade is a timely evolution.
SPQR, tapping into post-quantum Key Encapsulation Mechanisms (KEMs) like NIST’s ML-KEM 768, forms the backbone of this quantum defense strategy. ML-KEM accommodates secure exchanges, albeit requiring more extensive keys and strategic coordination.
Signal’s implementation of SPQR is crafted to smoothly integrate into the network, ensuring continued security even for devices not yet supporting the new system. Ultimately, as apps auto-update, all users will benefit from these enhanced security features without disruption.
