Asahi Ransomware Attack Halts Japan Beer Production and Supply Chains
Asahi’s Cybersecurity Challenge
Asahi Group Holdings is facing a significant crisis due to a recent ransomware attack that has hampered beer production since late September 2025. This cyberattack highlights the vulnerability of Japan’s manufacturing sector, with convenience stores and restaurants nationwide feeling the pinch due to supply shortages.
The attack began on September 29, disrupting order processing and logistics. By October 3, Asahi confirmed their servers were compromised by ransomware, hinting at a possible data breach. To mitigate the damage, they’ve isolated affected systems, focusing on protecting customer and partner data. Despite these efforts, domestic operations have been hit hard, though Asahi is trying to maintain product availability through limited manual order processing.
Strategic Response and Supply Chain Impact
An emergency task force, alongside cybersecurity experts, is working tirelessly to restore Asahi’s systems. However, to ensure security, external email communications are still down. The chaos in their order management and distribution has stopped production at several facilities, affecting popular items like Asahi Super Dry.
These disruptions extend beyond manufacturing; convenience stores like FamilyMart report halted shipments of private-label drinks made with Asahi, risking empty shelves. Similar issues are felt by restaurants such as Marugen Ramen, which seeks new suppliers, and Kisoji, transitioning to alternative brewers to continue service.
Asahi updated on October 6 that operations at their six domestic facilities are gradually resuming, with limited production of Asahi Super Dry and manual order processing via phone. Despite these challenges, President and CEO Atsushi Katsuki assured efforts to restore systems and minimize disruption.
