Theft Ransomware: Latest Attack Tactics and Defense Strategies

Last Updated: September 27, 2025By

Ransomware Spotlight: Theft Ransomware

The CYFIRMA Research and Advisory Team has unearthed a new player in the ransomware field, Theft Ransomware, a variant of the notorious Dharma family. This malicious software primarily targets Windows operating systems, encrypting files both local and network-shared. Despite its destructive nature, it cleverly preserves vital system components to allow devices to remain operational. By employing a unique victim identifier and other markers in affected files, it’s a sophisticated threat.

Theft Ransomware doesn’t just stop at encryption; it’s a master of persistence, embedding itself deeply into the system for future attacks. Its methods include disabling active processes like document editors, and erasing system recovery points, effectively locking users out of their own data. Alarmingly, this malware also capitalizes on double extortion tactics by threatening to reveal stolen corporate data unless a ransom is paid.

Technical Framework and Strategic Guidance

Relying on the MITRE Attack Framework, Theft displays a diverse array of Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs). It deletes shadow copies through Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) commands, renders recovery nearly impossible, and evades detection by adapting to monitored environments. The ransomware sustains its operations across system reboots through registry manipulation, marking it a persistent cyber adversary.

To counteract these threats, organizations are advised to strengthen their cybersecurity posture, ensuring both cloud and local systems are robustly secured and routinely backed up. Proactive strategies such as zero-trust frameworks, multifactor authentication, and consistent software updates are crucial in minimizing exposure and protecting valuable assets.

Emerging Malware Trends and Cybersecurity Incidents

This week also highlights the rise of RavenStealer, a stealthy, modular malware targeting browser-stored data for credential theft. Its utilization of channels like Telegram for communication and evasion makes it particularly menacing, easily bypassing conventional antivirus defenses.

In recent cyber incidents, European airports experienced disruptions due to an attack on Collins Aerospace, affecting check-in processes and leading to flight cancellations. Moreover, a ransomware assault on HappyTenant in the UAE disrupted operations, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance and prepared response plans.

In facing these cyber challenges, a well-rounded approach involving top-notch security measures and a culture of cybersecurity awareness will help organizations stay one step ahead.
