EPB Quantum, ORNL & NVIDIA Launch Hybrid Quantum Computing Breakthrough

Last Updated: September 23, 2025By

EPB Quantum’s Leap Into the Future

The 2025 Quantum World Congress brought exciting news as EPB Quantum℠ revealed its next big step: hybrid computing integration. Thanks to a collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), EPB Quantum is set to leverage NVIDIA’s DGX system at their Chattanooga center, home of the country’s first operational quantum network. This sets the stage for commissioning the lonQ Forte Enterprise Quantum Computer by early 2026.

This collaboration aims to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the realm of quantum computing. One pioneering project focuses on optimizing power grid efficiency using hybrid computing resources. The goal? To revolutionize power distribution systems across the United States. David Wade, CEO of EPB, believes this venture will fill a crucial gap by providing robust quantum development resources to various players, from entrepreneurs to universities.

Collaborative Efforts and Innovations

Since 2009, EPB has gathered massive operational data via its energy grid’s extensive sensor network. The new initiative intends to reduce electrical losses and bolster grid reliability. Stephen Streiffer, ORNL’s director, highlighted the synergy of research prowess with practical energy infrastructure to drive future innovations. Past collaborations have successfully transitioned theoretical quantum concepts into practical applications, like quantum-secure communications.

Niccolo de Masi, CEO of lonQ, emphasized the critical need for algorithms that unlock quantum technology’s real-world potential. The initiative aims to deliver impactful insights beyond controlled lab settings, utilizing EPB’s established infrastructure. Research teams will use the blended power of classical and quantum computing to explore EPB’s grid data in new and groundbreaking ways.

Sam Stanwyck from NVIDIA noted that the merging of quantum and classical computing will define future scientific exploration. This project’s findings could serve as a model for other energy systems across EPB’s 600-square-mile distribution area in southeastern Tennessee. It’s an exciting time for quantum computing, with EPB Quantum leading the charge toward a more efficient and connected energy future.
