Ransomware Attack Paralyzes Berlin Airport—Major Flight Delays

Last Updated: September 23, 2025By

Airports Grapple with Ransomware Turmoil

Many travelers at Berlin and other European airports faced significant delays, as a ransomware attack wreaked havoc on their schedules. On Monday, 70% of flights departing from Berlin-Brandenburg Airport struggled with setbacks. Eurocontrol, responsible for Europe’s air traffic, reported that only 30% of flights left Berlin on time, without exceeding a 15-minute delay.

Brussels Airport, hit hard by the attack, managed only 15% of flights to depart as planned, urging travelers to arrive hours early and carriers to slay half their flights. Other key hubs like Dublin and London Heathrow also faced minor turbulence in check-in and baggage systems. This disruption has been linked back to an IT provider, Collins Aerospace, compromised by the attack last Friday.

Ripple Effects and Recovery Efforts

The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) confirmed this was indeed a ransomware breach, though details remain hazy regarding the attack’s origin and possible ransom demands on Collins Aerospace. These incidents remind us of the persistent threats ransomware poses, especially to critical infrastructure sectors like transportation.

Adding to the chaos, returning marathon participants swelled Berlin Airport’s numbers to an anticipated 95,000 travelers—far above the typical Monday figures. Despite only a few cancellations, passengers were encouraged to embrace online check-ins and self-service kiosks.

As Collins Aerospace works to fully restore systems, delays may drag on. Berlin Airport reassured travelers, emphasizing the importance of ensuring systems are malware-free before reconnecting. Continue following updates for the latest travel advisories and preparations.
