The report, a collaboration between Pure Storage and the University of Technology Sydney, underscores the pressure businesses face as they navigate the tricky waters of technological advancement and geopolitical changes.

There’s a palpable anxiety about data security in the air. As Pure Storage points out, the stakes are high. Ignoring data sovereignty could mean not just financial strain but also regulatory penalties and a hit to stakeholder trust. In fact, 92% of the survey’s participants feel the heat from geopolitical shifts, which they believe amplifies sovereignty risks. Neglecting to address these could, they warn, tarnish reputations.

A Call for Action in Data Sovereignty

Further findings highlight an urgent message: businesses must act promptly to prevent loss of customer trust, a top concern for 85% of those surveyed. An impressive 78% are already on the move, adopting strategies like diversifying service providers, building sovereign data centers, and tightening governance in their contracts.

Alex McMullan, Pure Storage’s CTO for International, sheds light on the importance of a modern data sovereignty plan. Without it, organizations risk trust erosion, financial losses, and lost competitive ground. His advice? Adopt a balanced strategy: assess risks across workloads, secure key operations, and use the public cloud strategically. This multifaceted approach not only cushions risk but also fosters organizational innovation and resilience, equipping businesses to thrive amid digital complexities.
