NCSC Launches PQC Pilot: Boosting UK Cybersecurity for the Quantum Age
Exploring the NCSC’s PQC Pilot Program
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has launched an exciting pilot program aiming to steer the UK’s critical infrastructure toward post-quantum cryptography (PQC). This is a proactive step to ensure that by March 31, 2027, the infrastructure remains robust and secure against future technological threats. The pilot offers two service pathways. First is the Discovery & Migration Planning service, which maps out the current digital assets to identify weak spots and prioritize system enhancements, all aligned with NCSC timelines. The second is Advice, which takes insights from the discovery phase, guiding the selection and integration of PQC algorithms. Participating suppliers must meet the NCSC’s standards, ensuring high-quality upgrades.
The program is accessible to seasoned companies like Arqit, IBM, and Capgemini, all vetted against NCSC’s PQC Standards. Firms interested in participating must go through a three-part application process, involving a commercial assessment, technical evaluation, and completion of contracts. The next chance to apply is in late spring 2026. This pilot seeks not only immediate participation but also feedback to perfect the selection criteria for the future Assured Cyber Security Consultancy (ACSC) program.
Future-Proofing UK Infrastructure
The ACSC initiative is a collaborative effort to empower government bodies and vital industries with certified PQC professionals. A range of resources has been provided, including Work Practices Documents and Buyer’s Guides, to facilitate smoother participation. The NCSC emphasizes that companies begin with a discovery phase that scrutinizes current cryptographic systems and initiates a quantum-ready transformation strategy. This careful planning phase is intended to mitigate risks from quantum computing advancements, ensuring a structured upgrade path.
NCSC’s strategic broadening of the ACSC scheme aims to ease PQC expertise access, significantly enhancing national security. This expansion aims to build a larger talent pool, easing bottlenecks and enriching the knowledge base essential for PQC transition success. For organizations diving into this endeavor, expert guidance will be available at every step, assisting in strengthening the UK’s cyber resilience against emerging technological challenges.
