Uganda’s AI Factory: Powering Africa’s Data Sovereignty Revolution
Uganda’s Groundbreaking AI Factory Initiative
Uganda is preparing to make history with Africa’s first artificial intelligence (AI) factory, located at the 600MW Karuma Hydropower Plant alongside the Nile River. This facility, known as the Aeonian Project, plans to leverage renewable energy to create robust AI infrastructure meant to keep African data processing within the continent. This addresses the pressing need for AI development tailored to local needs and boosts digital sovereignty.
The phased project begins with a 15MW AI module and a 10MW supercomputer named USIO, expected to launch in late 2026. The scheme is designed to expand further, with completion anticipated by 2028. Key collaborators include global entities like Germany’s GIZ, Finland’s HAUS, and Nvidia.
USIO will feature Nvidia’s Blackwell GPU architecture, maximizing the use of roughly 100MW of surplus power from Karuma through energy efficiency innovations. Oladele Oyekunle of Synectics Technologies emphasizes the importance of sustainably managing Africa’s data infrastructure.
Green Energy and Local Connectivity
At the core of Aeonian’s design is its claim as one of the greenest AI data centers worldwide, courtesy of its exclusive use of renewable hydropower and advanced cooling techniques relying on river water. This cutting-edge approach is supported by Schneider Electric, highlighting a commitment to low-carbon data processing.
In addition to energy efficiency, Aeonian aims to enhance connectivity across Africa via a new 2,500km fiber-optic network, linking Uganda with undersea cables in Kenya and Tanzania. This upgrade is set to overcome latency issues and bolster regional and global data interchange.
Oladele Oyekunle and Ifeanyi Odoh of Schneider Electric East Africa underscore how these efforts make sure that Africa can securely process and benefit from its data right within its borders.
Strategic Positioning in Global AI
Amidst a global push for AI infrastructure, Aeonian positions Uganda to compete with international AI hubs by blending large-scale capabilities and local focus. While Asia builds on vast ecosystems and Latin America prioritizes niche applications, Aeonian strives to marry these strategies with unique African needs.
The facility’s proximity to hydropower reduces emissions and energy costs, appealing to environmentally conscious seekers of data processing solutions. By facilitating local research and interface with African universities, Aeonian strengthens domestic innovation and capabilities.
Challenges remain, particularly in developing skilled talent to sustain growth. Yet the potential of this strategic asset to spearhead Africa’s AI future is undeniable, representing a significant shift toward self-sufficient and responsible tech development within the continent.
