DOJ Announces $11 Million Bounty on Ransomware Kingpin
US DOJ’s $11 Million Bounty on Alleged Cybercriminal
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is making headlines with its $11 million bounty on Volodymyr Tymoshchuk. This Ukrainian national is accused of being the mastermind behind a ransomware operation that allegedly cost companies a staggering $18 billion. Operating under various aliases, Tymoshchuk’s alleged cybercrimes have affected over 250 firms in the US over three years.
Tymoshchuk is linked to notorious ransomware variants like LockerGoga, MegaCortex, and Nefilim. These groups have wrought havoc across industries, with LockerGoga infamously crippling operations at Norway’s Norsk Hydro, costing $81 million. As law enforcement closed in, it’s believed Tymoshchuk shifted gears, targeting big corporations with Nefilim, which was marketed to hackers for a share of their spoils.
Cracking Down on Ransomware Vigilantes
Officials like Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti are vocal about the seriousness of these cyber threats. He highlighted how Tymoshchuk’s schemes have caused global disruptions, reinforcing the DOJ’s mission to dismantle such operations. US Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. labeled Tymoshchuk a “serial ransomware criminal,” noting his adeptness in evading capture by inventing new malware strains.
This DOJ action is more than legal; it’s a message. With many extortion attempts foiled by FBI warnings and initiatives like “No More Ransomware,” authorities are setting a precedent. FBI Assistant Director Christopher G. Raia reminds cybercriminals: impunity is off the table. Facing charges ranging from computer fraud to unauthorized access, Tymoshchuk could be staring at a life sentence if convicted.
