Akira Ransomware Exploits SonicWall: Patch Urgently to Prevent Breaches

Akira Ransomware Exploiting SonicWall Vulnerabilities

The cyber landscape is seeing familiar threats re-emerge with alarming efficiency. The Akira ransomware group is back in the spotlight, utilizing critical vulnerabilities in SonicWall devices. This method mirrors tactics seen last year when similar exploits were rampant. Initially mistaken for a fresh zero-day vulnerability, a closer look identified it as an issue known for over a year.

Cybersecurity firm Rapid7 raised the alarm that Akira is exploiting misconfigured SonicWall SSLVPNs alongside these vulnerabilities, allowing them easy access to systems deemed secure. Hundreds of cases reported by Rapid7’s incident response team highlight the wide-reaching implications, putting varied industries on high alert.

Urgent Call for Enhanced Security Measures

The prime focus is on the CVE-2024-40766, an access control flaw tagged with a severe CVSS score of 9.8, disclosed in August 2024. It’s not just Akira but also the Fog group that have utilized this flaw for organizational breaches. SonicWall’s warning stresses that many businesses haven’t taken necessary steps to mitigate these risks.

Emma Stevens from Bitsight reported an immense exposure with over 438,000 SonicWall devices still publicly accessible. The rush between September and December 2024 led to at least 100 organizational breaches through this flaw, with attackers often achieving full encryption in a short span.

SonicWall counters these exploits by pointing out that recent incidents reaffirm their previous disclosures. They underscore the importance of applying the latest patches and instituting solid security measures, such as multi-factor authentication and restricting Virtual Office portal access, to shield enterprises from these pervasive attacks.
