OpenAI’s Norway Data Center: Powering Europe’s AI Sovereignty with Renewable Energy

OpenAI’s Bold Move in Europe with Stargate Norway

OpenAI is crossing the Atlantic to build its very first European AI data center, aptly named Stargate Norway. This groundbreaking project is a partnership with British cloud team Nscale and Norway’s energy giant, Aker. It’s more than just bricks and mortar; it represents Europe’s push for AI self-sufficiency.

Why Norway, you ask? Narvik, located in the northern part of the country, is the chosen location because it offers a perfect mix of natural resources and infrastructure. With its renewable hydropower and naturally cold environment, the city is set to provide the ideal setting for a sustainable, high-efficiency data center. The plan is for this facility to initially create 230 megawatts (MW) of power, climbing to 290 MW by 2026. Such capacity will support up to 100,000 Nvidia GPUs, enhancing OpenAI’s tech arsenal significantly.

Driving AI Independence in Europe

Stargate Norway is not just a tech milestone; it’s a statement of intent. Europe aims to shore up domestic AI talent and secure data sovereignty, and this center is a pivotal piece of that puzzle. With Nscale and Aker steering a $1 billion investment, the vision is clear: strengthen Europe’s AI ecosystem, supporting homegrown startups and researchers.

There’s an environmental angle too, embedded in the DNA of this project. Following the EU’s sustainability playbook, the facility will tap into renewable energy and even recycle excess heat. It’s about building a future that’s tech-forward and climate-conscious. With OpenAI now spreading roots from the U.S. to UAE, UK, and now Norway, Stargate Norway positions Europe as a serious player on the global AI stage.
