Morocco’s Rise in the Data Center Arena

As of June 2025, Morocco has taken the lead in data center growth across Africa, boasting 23 facilities and surpassing South Africa. This North African nation has quickly embraced digital transformation, driven by a strategic plan unveiled by the Agency for Digital Development in 2020. Key initiatives included enhanced digital infrastructure, tax incentives, and the National Charter of Investment. A pivotal 2021 law requiring sensitive data to be stored domestically has further fueled data center expansion through data repatriation.

Telecom giants like Maroc Telecom and Inwi, along with operators such as Medasys and N+One, dominate the sector, while major banks build their own data sites, and smaller ones lease capacities. Local efforts to attract investment have led to concentrated growth in Casablanca-Settat and Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, owing to full internet penetration and reliable energy sources. Not to be outdone, Tetouan welcomed a $500 million data center deal by American firm Iozera.

A Future Fueled by Data

The rise of data centers is just one aspect of Morocco’s burgeoning digital scene. Fintech, AI, and e-government efforts, spearheaded by programs like Digital Morocco 2030, are reshaping the nation’s tech landscape. This digital momentum was on full display at the 2025 Gitex Africa expo in Marrakech, which hosted over 1,400 exhibitors and 45,000 visitors from 130 countries.

With data often termed as ‘the new oil,’ Morocco is aptly positioning itself as a leader in digital infrastructure, paving the way for economic growth and innovation. The journey ahead looks promising, as data continues to grow and evolve, offering boundless opportunities.
