Top Post-Quantum Security Steps for CISOs and Organizations

Facing the Quantum Challenge

During the Infosecurity Europe event, experts came together to discuss the looming threat of cryptographically relevant quantum computers (CRQCs). These advanced machines could potentially crack the encryption methods that protect financial transactions and vital records, posing a huge risk to global security.

Despite the gravity, many organizations, especially those involved in supply chains, aren’t proactive enough about adopting post-quantum cryptography (PQC). Karl Holmqvist, CEO of Lastwall, stressed the urgency, saying, “If you have secrets that will endure for many years, it’s crucial to address this matter promptly.” In contrast, Dan Cuthbert from Santander urged security officers to demand clarity on PQC readiness from their vendors.

Moving Toward Collaboration and Compliance

Anne Leslie from IBM highlighted a promising trend: competitors in various industries are collaborating more to enhance their understanding and capabilities in dealing with these quantum threats. She sees regulatory frameworks like NIS2 and DORA as potential allies, helping to push organizations toward better cryptographic defenses.

Looking forward, Holmqvist advised CISOs to start securing funds for post-quantum initiatives by inventorying their company’s critical assets. Cuthbert added that auditing current cryptographic deployment and obtaining cryptographic bills of materials (CBOMs) from vendors must be priorities. If organizations fail to adapt, they risk falling behind as these quantum encryptions evolve.
