Why Data Sovereignty Matters in UK Cloud Contracts
UK IT Leaders Demand Data Sovereignty in Cloud Services
The call for UK independence in data management is getting louder. A recent survey by the UK cloud computing company Civo revealed that over 60% of IT executives are uncomfortable with relying on American cloud services. With US tariffs on the rise and data sovereignty becoming a hot topic, these concerns are not without reason.
According to the survey, which gathered responses from over 1,000 UK IT leaders, a remarkable 61% view data sovereignty as a critical strategic goal. Many—around 45%—are even considering shifting their data back to domestic or non-US servers. In the ever-evolving world of digital technology, this trend reflects a significant pivot towards greater control over data.
The Push for Trustworthy AI and Data Governance
Data sovereignty isn’t just about storage location—it’s also about trust, especially with AI. Two-thirds of respondents indicated they’d use AI only if their data ownership was guaranteed. However, trust in major US tech firms remains low, at around 37%. This skepticism underlines a need for transparency—something Civo’s CEO, Mark Boost, sees as lacking in the actions of many American cloud giants.
With regulatory challenges such as the US CLOUD Act potentially risking UK data exposure, tech firms like Google and Microsoft are making efforts to prioritize sovereignty. Microsoft plans to expand its computing capacity in Europe by 40% to better safeguard local data, while Google is ensuring UK organizations can perform machine learning processing within national borders.
These moves signal a clear shift in how tech giants operate amid the growing importance of data sovereignty. As these discussions continue, it’s evident that securing sensitive information remains a priority for UK IT leaders.
