Interlock Ransomware Deploys NodeSnake RAT: Education Sector Under Attack

Last Updated: June 1, 2025By

Understanding the NodeSnake RAT: A Persistent Cyber Threat

Recently, two UK universities faced troubling cyber intrusions involving a Remote Access Trojan (RAT) known as NodeSnake. This malware, used by the Interlock ransomware group, showcases sophisticated techniques to infiltrate networks. As research from Quorum Cyber’s Threat Intelligence team suggests, these attacks are part of a concerted effort targeting the education sector, a prime target due to the sensitive nature of their data.

NodeSnake exhibits advanced traits designed for persistent access, system reconnaissance, and remote command execution. Built using JavaScript and executed with NodeJS, it has two variants, NodeSnake.A and NodeSnake.B, each with unique capabilities. NodeSnake.A disguises itself as “ChromeUpdater” and uses basic encryption for stealth, while NodeSnake.B enhances this by encrypting data dynamically and compressing it, making detection challenging.

Interlock’s Ransomware and Defensive Measures

Interlock, emerging in October 2024, is known for double-extortion attacks targeting major organizations in North America and Europe. They independently conduct these attacks by encrypting data and leaving ransom notes like “QUICK_GUIDE.txt” in compromised directories.

NodeSnake often arrives via phishing emails, a common delivery vector for RATs like Xworm and AsyncRAT. The modular nature of NodeSnake.B suggests Interlock aims to improve its adaptability, posing a high risk to enterprises. To combat these threats, implementing Zero Trust strategies, updating software, conducting user training, and deploying robust endpoint protection are crucial steps.
