NordVPN Rolls Out Post-Quantum Encryption for All Devices
NordVPN Embraces Post-Quantum Encryption
NordVPN has taken a proactive step in enhancing security with the introduction of post-quantum encryption (PQE) across its platforms. This comes as a response to the looming challenge of quantum computing, which threatens to undermine current encryption protocols like AES-256. Seamlessly integrated across all applications, NordVPN’s latest update is designed to future-proof user data against potential quantum threats.
Having initially introduced PQE in its Linux application in September 2024, NordVPN is preparing a full rollout across all major devices by 2025. This includes compatibility with Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and smart TV ecosystems such as tvOS and Android TV.
The Significance of Post-Quantum Encryption
The term “Q-Day” refers to the anticipated moment when quantum computers could crack traditional encryption methods at alarming speeds. To counteract this scenario, PQE has become a necessity for VPN services. NordVPN leads this charge by utilizing the NordLynx protocol to achieve robust PQE, protecting users from possible quantum exploits.
Activating PQE is straightforward for users—simply toggle it on within the app settings. However, note that PQE will not work with NordVPN features like Dedicated IP, OpenVPN, or obfuscated servers.
Marijus Briedis, NordVPN’s CTO, emphasizes, “As quantum technology progresses, conventional encryption protocols will become susceptible. Our commitment to PQE signifies our proactive approach in safeguarding users’ data for both present and future challenges.”
While NordVPN takes the lead, other VPN leaders like ExpressVPN have also started integrating similar features, enhancing digital security landscapes across the board. For users, this advancement in encryption technology prioritizes privacy amidst an evolving technological backdrop.
