How Ransomware Is Fueling the Healthcare Data Breach Crisis

Last Updated: May 21, 2025By

Rising Wave of Healthcare Data Breaches

Recent findings published in JAMA Network Open highlight a significant uptick in healthcare data breaches, with hacking and related IT incidents responsible for an alarming 88% of compromised patient records from 2010 to 2024. Particularly concerning are ransomware attacks, which alone account for nearly 40% of these breaches.

Ransomware incidents have seen a striking rise, climbing from nonexistent in 2010 to making up over 30% of all breaches by 2021. Interestingly, last year recorded a dip to 11% in ransomware’s role in total healthcare breaches.

The research, emphasizing incidents affecting more than 500 individuals, observed a sharp increase in hacking-related occurrences in healthcare. The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) identifies breaches under categories like hacking/IT incidents, theft, unauthorized access/disclosure, improper disposal/loss, and those of unknown origin.

Tackling the Ransomware Threat

To understand the magnitude, consider this: healthcare breaches soared from 216 in 2010 to 566 by 2024. A mere 4% of breaches were due to hacking in 2010, which shot up to 81% last year, with hacking being responsible for 91% of exposed records. Total compromised patient records leapt from 6 million in 2010 to a massive 170 million in 2024.

Since 2020, over half of these compromised records annually link to ransomware, peaking at 69% in the past year. This rise underscores the pressing threat ransomware poses, exacerbated by the healthcare sector’s limited cybersecurity resources and the dire consequences of operational downtime.

Mitigating strategies include requiring specific ransomware data in OCR submissions, reassessing breach severity, and tracking cryptocurrency transactions to curb ransom payments. This spike in breaches calls for bolstered cybersecurity defenses to protect patient information.
